As school is winding down for the summer, you may be receiving information from the school regarding requirements for next school year.  For some students, this will include a sports/athletic physical.  According to University of Interscholastic League rules, all students from grades 7th-12thwill be required to complete a medical history questionnaire each year they participate in athletics or sports.  All students entering into 7th, 9th, and 11thgrades will required to have a sports/athletic physical prior to participating in sports.  For students entering 8th, 10thand 12thgrade, they will only be required to have a sports/athletic physical if they have had an injury (fracture, concussion, etc.) the preceding school year or if they are found to have risk factors for injury or disease on the medical history form.

A well child visit is the most effective and comprehensive way to obtain a sports/athletics physical.  Many facilities offer sports physicals, including the schools themselves.  However, these providers do not know your child’s history and do not have access to his/her medical chart.  In addition, if an abnormality is found on the examination, these facilities often do not have the ability to refer your child to a specialist and will instead direct you back to your primary care physician.   These types of physicals do not replace Well Child Exams.

Most school districts require that the sports/athletic physical be performed after May 1, 2012 for the 2012-2013 school year.

So, what happens if your child already had his/her Well Child Exam for the year, but it occurred prior to the May 1stdeadline?  Insurance companies will only pay for 1 Well Child Exam per year.  Thus, we will bring your child in for a regular visit and perform another exam for the purpose of the sports/athletic physical.  This will not be billed to your insurance as a Well Child Exam.  Instead we will bill according to any problems we identify during our visit or family history of any problems.  This allows us as your child’s primary care physician to ensure that your child is medically cleared to participate in sports.

Along with the American Academy of Pediatrics, we believe that keeping these sports/athletics physicals within your child’s medical home is extremely important and ultimately safer for your student athlete.

Please don’t hesitate to call us at 972-442-2300 if you have any questions regarding sports/athletics physicals or if you would like to schedule an appointment.  These visits fill up extremely fast, so make your child’s appointment today.
